If you’re on the health and fitness side of social media, then you have probably heard of the pelvic floor. In recent years, the awareness of pelvic floor physical therapy has grown. Like many people, you may have questions - What is the pelvic floor? Do I need pelvic floor physical therapy? Do I even have a pelvic floor?
If you’re reading this, then you have a pelvic floor. On a basic level, the term pelvic floor refers to a group of muscles that attach to your pelvis. These muscles are present in three layers in every person’s body but arranged differently according to external structures. As a group, the pelvic floor muscles perform many roles; supporting abdominal and pelvic organs, assisting in bowel and bladder function, maintaining pressure, and supporting genitalia during sexual function, as well as pregnancy.
Pelvic floor physical therapy identifies dysfunction in the pelvic floor in isolation as well as within a holistic system. Like any other muscle group, they can be tight or weak. In turn, the lumbar and thoracic spine, hips, and core muscles can all be affected. Pelvic floor therapy focuses on building awareness of the pelvic floor, strengthening the muscles, improving coordination and relaxation.
